Al and Kristina's JourneyLast Updated: June 27, 2011
About 6 years ago, Al and Kristina started trying to conceive and couldn't achieve a pregnancy. When Kristina was just a teen, she had a cyst on one of her ovaries which ruptured and became septic necessitating the removal of one of her tubes. Kristina then discovered that the one remaining tube she had was completely closed too. Kristina and Al tried surgery to open the remaining tube, but after 6 months more of trying their doctor told them their one hope for pregnancy would be IVF. Like so many others, they could not afford to pay for IVF and their insurance did not cover the procedure.
Kristina started experiencing more pain. She discovered that her remaining tube had a cyst the size of a grapefruit resulting in more surgery to remove it and drain the tube and discovery that she also had adhesions. Her ovary was actually stuck to the back of her uterus. More heartbreak, pain and surgeries and at 28 Al and Kristina's only hope for pregnancy was out-of-reach IVF treatment.
Hope was renewed for Al and Kristina when they were chosen as scholarship recipients.
