Separation of amnion & chorion, amnio canceled

My amnio was supposed to be on Wednesday, April 6. The test was canceled due to a separation of the amnion and chorion. My doctor couldn't really give me any information on cause and/or possible concerns for the fetus. In addition, I was told that the baby appeared to have swelling at the neck, possible indicating Downs or Turners syndrome. My OB guessed my chances of having a baby with a chromosonal disorder at this point to be about 10%, but he said he really wasn't sure. I have been referred to a perinatologist who will attempt to do an amnio if the amnion and chorion have fused. If not, I will be referred for CVS testing. I'm having a great deal of difficulty finding information on the separation. In addition, I'm being told that nuchal fold measurements are only really accurate up to 13 weeks. I'm very confused and frightened and would appreciate any information or referral sources.
