Hi,
Firstly, congratulations. You must be quite excited!
I wish I could have found more useful information when I was going through this in early 2002. I was initially told by a resident filling in at my gp's office "you will either lose the baby or you won't, there is nothing you can do to mitigate the risk." That was unpleasant and likely true. Could have been delivered a bit more tactfully considering I was hormonal and stressed as all heck.
I showed her. I carried to term then and now I have a beautiful daughter that will be 3 in July. My bleeding lasted several months. A lot of it was heavy and a lot of it was bright red. I too noticed more discharge and redder with bm, especially if I strained at all - counteract the pre-natal vitamins wit lots of fruit and veggies. My gp at the time (was referred to an ob at 5 months) put me on bedrest (started at 3 months and lasted until 6 months). At 5 months I had to move across Canada for my husband's work. My ob there was more recently through medical school and did not subscribe to the same school of thought. She took me off bedrest - yay! I will say that I did notice and increase in bleeding when I was active greater than what the gp recommended (30 min/day including pees and shower time). It seemed to settle down at 5 months or so and then it just stopped. The balance of the pregnancy was good. I didn't stop having sex or exercising once off bedrest. I had none with my second pregnancy and also carried that baby to term. She just turned 1.
Um, if your doctors are not concerned I don't know that I would be. I know, easier said than done especially when this is your first pregnancy. I would be saying, yah right, lady if I was reading this at my first pregnancy with sh. Now, looking back 3 years later I know it can turn out just fine. I can't say if the bedrest did the trick or not. I don't think it hurt. I was waited on hand and foot by my husband for several months. I often think back on that time fondly... tee hee. :) I can't imagine it happening any time soon. Drats. :(
I have since met many, many people that have gone through the same thing. Some have had it with each pregnancy. Some on bed rest, some not. All carried to term. I have yet to meet someone who was diagnosed SH and miscarried. Not sure if miscarriages are ever diagnosed as previous SH or not. It is a shame that your ob doesn't ask women in their practice that have the same condition to be available for a support/network group.
I hope this helps you. Feel free to ask any questions if you want.
I'll keep you and your baby in my thoughts, Stacie.
Shelley
