for doc: high risk pregnancy and "taking it easy"

Posted by AnM on 10:07 9/19/2005:

Hi dr. Cusick,

I am a very high risk pt, having had a number of pregnancy losses in thesecond trim. My one successful pregnancy resulted in my daughter, born at 30 weeks. She is doing very well. With that pregnancy I was on Lovenox for a history of abruptions, 17P, folic acid, aspirin. At 18w I had an emergency cerclage, on home bed rest till the end of the pregnancy. She was delivered early due to PROM.

I am now pregnant again,17w, same meds as before, early cerclage this time, and we are hoping to avoid bed rest. In this situation, is there benefit in taking it easy? My peri insists I should only work 8hrs/day (my job is physically non demanding,I sit all day, but long hours/work on weekends are expected..). Is there a connection between stress and hours worked and say rates of premature births (or other pregnancy outcome)? Do you usually recommend taking it easy to your patients? I am asking because I have to deal with my managers who think this is a frivolous request (yeah, you're tired, we all are), to work only normal hours for a while... If there was a clinical study showing a connection it would help me a lot...

Thanks much
An
