Not preg., but question regarding PIO shots

If one should become preg. by IVF, why and for how long does one really require a progesterone supplement (PIO shot)? Is the PIO shot required in IVF and why? Is it because there is no corpus luteum? Doesn't the preg. at some point produce prog. on it's own. Just a technical curiosity. thank you
