Paxil during 1st trimester

Posted by Kat1 A on 19:33 12/12/2005:

Hi Dr. Cusick,

I am 30 weeks along and have been taking Paxil 20mg daily throughout this pregnancy. I have been on this medication since we lost our infant son 14 months ago to a genetic defect (I am a carrier for a rare, x-linked disorder). This medication has helped me a lot and it was determined by my OBGyn that I should stay on it while pregnant.

Anyway, I recently heard in the news about the research that just came out saying that taking Paxil during the 1st trimester can increase the baby's risk (from 1% to 2%) for atrial and ventricular septal defects. During this current pregnancy, at 12 weeks, I had a high-level ultrasound during CVS testing (which came back normal) and I have also had a regular OB ultrasound at 24 weeks which came back normal. If there were atrial or ventricular septal defects of the heart, would these be visible on ultrasound? Is this something I should ask my OB to investigate further? I've just experienced a lot already and I'd like all the reassurance I can get that this baby is OK.

Thanks for your help.
