When I was pregnant with my daughter I actually caught the chicken pox when I was about 30 weeks pregnant. I caught them from a daughter of a co-worker that came to visit one afternoon. It was a miserable experience. I was out of work for 3 weeks. At the time I was told that it can cause birth defects as well as learning disabilities later on. I was lucky my daughter has been fine.
I also went into preterm labor at 33 weeks and it may have been due to other problems, but the doctor didn't rule out exposure to the chickenpox bug. If someone has the shingles I'd keep my distance if I were you. Better to be safe than sorry. I would think a relative would be understanding. Who needs one more worry during pregnancy! Good Luck.
