Echogenic bowel in 2nd tri Hi-Res U/S...

Posted by scottdiaus on 03:33 10/30/2006:

Hi!

I had a High Resolution U/S prior to amnio on this past Friday, at 16 weeks, 5 days, and the peri said that the baby's bowel was "bright"/echogenic. The peri said it could be due to new high strength U/S machine, Cystic Fibrosis (but I tested neg as a carrier last month), infection - they drew blood for a TORCH panel (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes Simplex). Apparently, this can also be a soft marker for Downs (we just did amnio, and had done PGD prior to IVF), various bowel issues, IUGR and more. Obviously, we are hoping this was only seen because the MACHINE was too strong. We noticed that they had alternated tranducers during the U/S, and are wondering if they could have been different strengths. The studies we've seen related the use of transducers of 8 mhz (as opposed to 5 mhz) as noting this "brightness," much more often, as I understand it, even when no problem exists. But of course, we are nervous. Nobody we know anywhere, seems to have any familiarity with this. I'm glad, but wish I knew someone who know about this! Will probably call office with more questions, when they open! If anyone has any thoughts -- I would be most interested!!!

Thanks!
Di
