I have been on bedrest since Dec., for IUGR/SGA issues. I've seen 2 - 4 diffrerent perinatologists, although primarily 2. I've had IVF w/ ICSI and PGD, NT Scan and amnio and TORCH titers all NORMAL. One peri thinks my placenta is "moth-eaten, " and somewhat thickened and the cord looks somewhat short -- under 50 cm and hypereimic (sp). Long bones are 6 weeks behind dates at this point, head and abdomen are 4 weeks behind. Baby is beneath the 5th percentile for everything. Other peri thinks the cord looks fine and the placenta not great, but that all the blood flows look fine and normal, so the baby may be "petite," because my husband and I are not big people. We are 5'4" and 5"9". My previous babies were 7 lbs 15 oz and 7 lbs 1 oz - both at 38 weeks. I do have a sister who is a 4'10" adult, and was 5 lbs at 37 weeks. The second peri thinks this explains a lot. He thinks the cord looks fine and is not short, unless 20 cm, or under. But to me, petite family, does NOT explain a baby who is two and a half pounds at 34 weeks! Nobody else was THIS "petite!" The peri who thinks the placenta and cord are the problem is a genetics specialist who does research on dwarfism. After much looking and measuring my baby, she says her "gut" tells her there is not a genetic syndrome going on here, and the placenta and cord are "ugly." We see another peri who will look tomorow. My amniotic fluid is hovering around 8. Since growth has been slowing more, they expect to deliver me within the next week or two, although they would have liked to get this baby girl ato 3 lbs! My BP remains ok, and I do have gestational diabetes and homozyzous MTHFR - was on Lovenox and just switched to heparin.
Is blood flow the mosat accurate predictor of a well functioning cord and placenta? What about appearance on U/S? (This "moth-eaten, " placenta and hyperemic, bunched up cord appearance?) This is confusing us and naturally, we are worried about our baby. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!
