cervix question and contractions

Posted by snick on 16:17 3/25/2008:

I have two questions about things I've experienced so far this pregnancy. First, a little history. My first pregnancy resulted in my son who was born at 38 weeks after I was on Terbutaline from 26 weeks until 36 weeks because of regular contractions.
I then had four losses (a d&e at 12.5 weeks, a d&e at 16 weeks, a d&e at 9 weeks and a chemical pregnancy at almost 5 weeks) and am now pregnant again. I am about 16 weeks. I had a cervical length ultrasound at 14 weeks and my cervix measured 31-32 mm. I was told by the OB that they like to see it at 40mm but don't get worried until it's 25mm or if it starts to get shorter. My OB also told me that if we see it shorten, we'll start talking about a cerclage. Is this typical for a cervix of this length?

Second, I have been having contractions for a couple of weeks. That doesn't worry me in and of itself, but they've lasted anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes and I am pretty sure they're not supposed to last that long. I usually get them in the morning and I drink about 120 ounces of water during the day, so it's not from activity or dehydration. Is this anything I should worry about? I had an ultrasound when my contraction was VERY painful last week and the baby looked fine, but with my history of loss, I'm concerned that things might be going south.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer.
