Dear Dr
Please could you tell me what causes subchronic hematoma and what is the treatment for it. I am 41yrs and 9wks pregnant, IVF At 8wk +2 (sunday)I noticed some cramping and followed with bright red blood and clots, I phoned my Dr who adviced bed rest and to have ultrasound on Tuesday, bleeding stopped the next day. U/S showed good heart beat and some subchronic heamatoma measuring 12x8mm I started bleeding again with more clots on friday, but stopped on saturday. My Dr has now adviced 3wks bed rest, and a scan again on tuesday. Please could you tell me what causes this and how it can be stopped, anything else I should be doing, to prevent this happening agai Thanks |

Dear Choice4,
I am so pleased to learn of your pregnancy . Unfortunately however, there is no easy answer for what causes subchorionic bleeding in the first trimester. What is important for you to know is that this is a fairly common problem and typically resolves on its own. There is no treatment that has been proven to be effective. There are various steps that most providers would agree are warranted to minimize the risk of exacerbating this problem like omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, discontinuation of low dose aspirin/heparin (if you're using these), high fiber diet to and pelvic rest. What has your doctor recommended? Please let us know the results of your upcoming scan. Best thoughts, ~Robert Robert Greene, MD, FACOG Medical Director SIRM--Northern California |

HI,
I just wanted to say I had one of these when I was pg with my twins. Scared the heck out of me as when I bled it was a lot and gushed out. I was only 6.3 weeks pg and thought for sure I was m/Cing. I was on Heparin therapy and was sooo afraid to quit that as I have immune issues. Everything worked out well! I have 2 beautiful 2 year olds. Hang in there and rest as they said. Good Luck. |

I just saw this today but thought I'd chime in that I too had a large subchorionic hematoma as well. It gradually subsided throughout the first trimester (only visible on u/s - I never bled). I stayed on my heparin and aspirin and my little one turns two on Nov 12! I'm so glad you're at 12+ weeks - great news!
Best wishes! |
