Default Unanswered Questions

We have tried to conceive for 5 years on our own, with no luck. In October of 2011 I started to get tested for health issues. The only issue they found was I am not ovulating on my own every month. I was put on Clomid 50mg and then the next month 100 mg, and my Progestene was tested on day 21 of every month. It went from 2.6 to 5.7 to 9.6 then to 28.9.

My husband has had two sperm analysis done.
The first showed that his volume, liquefaction,, and motility were 3 and a half times above normal, but his morphology was zero.

He is taking 12 vitamins a day for the past 90 days.

His 2nd sample showed that his liquefaction and motility were the same, but his morphology went to 1%, and his numbers when from 41.4 million to 8.8 million.

The fertility dr. now wants me to go straight to IVF. It costs 16 thousand for one cycle. My questions are:

1.) Can doing a blood test really show if I am ovulating?
2.) Can I still get pregnant doing an IUI with the above issues?
3.) Can all the supplements and extra vitamins he is taking be the cause for his number decline?
4.) Are there any cheaper options for this, because in Oklahoma, business are not required to pay for infertility treatments.

Everytime I try and ask these questions, I always get pushed to IVF.

Thanks,
Jessica

WHOA!!! Glad you wrote, Jessica -- How about finding out WHY his sperm morphology is poor first, rather than just jumping into an IVF cycle???!!!

To respond:
1.) Can doing a blood test really show if I am ovulating?
==> Yes, a progesterone blood level done a week after ovulation will indeed tell if ovulation took place or not.
2.) Can I still get pregnant doing an IUI with the above issues?
==> Yes, but the likelihood of pregnancy with 1% normal morphology is LOW. Why don't we first find out why his morphology is low and see if we can improve it???
3.) Can all the supplements and extra vitamins he is taking be the cause for his number decline?
==> Yes, depending on the combination of supplements.
4.) Are there any cheaper options for this, because in Oklahoma, business are not required to pay for infertility treatments.
==> I suggest he see a male fertility specialist. This is typically a Urologist who has special training in male fertility.

If a doc just keeps pushing IVF, it may be time for a second opinion!

Dr. Roseff,

He did see a Urologist, and did a full blood panel and physical on him. He said he is healthy as a horse, his hormones are normal and he has no disease. He does not smoke, drink, and is not overweight. Right now he is taking 12 vitamins per day, fertility blend, Vitamin D, and others.

The vitamin supplement you suggest for this he is also taking, we are just wondering if he needs to get off of some of the other ones. Or if we are missing anything else about this issue....

Did the Urologist send him for a scrotal ultrasound to R/O varicocele?

Also, there are some supplements that can block fertilization, so consider only having him take what's critical to his health or sperm.
