    Default The Misunderstood Child Poem...(m)

I was just given this poem the other day by a lady whose 11 yr old daughter is on the spectrum. I am sure it has been shared here but just in case, I wanted to share it. I don't mean to bring anyone down, but I think it is an AMAZING summary of a child with Autism, or any number of processing disorders! I gave it to Ashtyn's MDO teachers to read. They are SOO good with her but wanted them to understand a little more where she is coming from. We go Monday to the developmental/ neurologist Pedi for his official eval!

    THE MISUNDERSTOOD CHILD

    <O:p
I am the child that looks healthy and fine.
I was born with ten fingers and toes.
But something is different in my mind.
And what it is, nobody knows.

    <O:p
I am the child that struggles in school,
Though they say that Iím perfectly smart.
They tell me Iím lazy - can learn if I try -
But I donít seem to know where to start.

I am the child that wonít wear the clothes
Which hurt me or bother my feet.
I dread sudden noises, canít handle most smells,
And tastes Ė there are few foods Iíll eat.

I am the child that canít catch the ball
And runs with an awkward gait.
Iam the one chosen last on the team
And I cringe as I stand there and wait.

    <O:p
I am the child with whom no one will play -
The one that gets bullied and teased.
I try to fit in and I want to be liked,
But nothing I do seems to please.

    <O:p
I am the child that tantrums and freaks
Over things that seem petty and trite.
Youíll never know how I panic inside,
When Iím lost in my anger and fright.

    <O:p
I am the child that fidgets and squirms
Though Iím told to sit still and be good
Do you think that I choose to be out of control?
Donít you know that I would if I could?

    <O:p
I am the child with the broken heart
Though I act like I donít really care.
Perhaps thereís a reason God made this way Ė
Some message He sent me to share.
    <O:p
For I am the child that needs to be loved

    And accepted and valued too.
I am the child that is misunderstood,
I am different Ė but look just like you.
    <O:p
