Default I am SOOOO angry at the dentist!

I usually just lurk here due to lack of time and energy for posting. But I'm so mad right now, I have to post.

We've been using the same pediatric dentist for several years, but had to change recently due to insurance changes. Our old pedi dentist didn't even use the silver amalgam fillings anymore b/c of the controversy of mercury. I assumed that was the trend these days. Apparently not.

My dd has an immune system disease called eosinolphilic gastrointestinal disease. Basically her body thinks that the proteins in food are parasites, and her white blood cells attack her digestive tract when she eats. The new dentist was very aware of this because she gets most of her nutrition from an amino acid based formula. And the only other safe things for her to eat are about 8 fruits and sugar which has no protein. You can imagine what this has done to her teeth. We talked about it at length at her first appt a few weeks ago when the dentist found 3 cavities.

Fast forward to this morning when another dentist in the practice filled my dd's cavities. I mentioned to her at the beginning of the appt that I would like for them to try to get approval for her teeth to be cleaned every 4 months instead of 6 due to her diet causing excessive decay. We then discussed my dd's disease. After that she proceeded to fill my dd's teeth with mercury/silver amalgams. SHE NEVER ASKED ME WHAT I WANTED! And it did not occur to me that they would use amalgam since the old dentist doesn't use it anymore. So now my dd, WHO HAS A MAJOR IMMUNE SYSTEM DISEASE, has mercury in her mouth. When I figured out what had happened I questioned both the first dentist and the one from this morning. They each blamed the other. And now the older more experienced dentist who we saw at the first appt says that due to her compromised immune system the amalgam should never have been used and needs to come out. But everything I read about mercury fillings says that the greatest exposure is when it's put in and taken out.

I am just so angry about this. My poor dd has been through so much in her young life. And I know there's a lot of controversy about whether or not mercury is toxic in fillings, but now even the FDA now has cautions about people in poor health using them. And now I have to figure out if she 's more at risk if I leave them in or take them out. And this all could have been avoided IF THEY ASKED ME WHAT I WANTED!!!!!!!!! Their excuse was that my insurance would only pay for amalgam, but I would have gladly paid the difference. What's another $250 when I spend THOUSANDS on her medical care every year?!

Thanks if you've read this far. I just had to vent, and I knew that you ladies would understand.

You poor thing! What an awful situation. I think I'd be calling in an attorney at this point, and getting advice from a top top person in both dentistry and immunology. Seriously, was the dr. just not thinking at all?

What a frustrating situation. I didn't know anyone used those silver fillings anymore either and would have never even thought to ask when my DS had his filled a few weeks ago. I wish I had some advice beyond seeing if a specialist can offer you some guidance, but just wanted to offer hugs.

    Oh My.....

((((((hugs)))))) I don't even know what to tell you. I never knew that there was mercury in any fillings and have no advice what-so-ever. If I were in this position, I would definitely ask a specialist that I was working with what the best way to proceed is. My gosh!!! I have never even heard of such a thing. I guess you learn something new every day. yikes!!! Let us know how it turns out!

Thanks so much for all you replies. It helps to have people commiserate.

I have been in contact with a dentist I found on the web who specializes in taking mercury out safely. He has been so incredibly kind and willing to talk to me and answer my questions and help me come up with a plan. It has restored my faith in the dental profession. Unfortunately, he doesn't work with kids. But he is going to talk to her old pedi dentist about how to take them out safely. Hopefully, I will be able to get the excuse for a dentist who did this to her to pay for it, b/c I'm sure it will be expensive. And when it's all over, I plan to make a complaint with the state dental board. Because this kind dentist who has been helping me has said that the FDA regs now require dentists to disclose the risks of amalgam filling before using them. And she certainly didn't do that.

So thank you for all your support. It meant more than you know.

OH BOY! Sounds like a mess. Sorry this happened. I don't know much about it and to to tell you the truth, never even thought about fillings until your post. Sounds like your DD shouldn't have gottten the silver ones though. Keep us posted.
